Tshaukuesh Elizabeth Penashue has lived most of her life on the edge. I met her while she led the campaign against NATO’s low-level flying and bomb testing on Innu land during the 1980s and ’90s. Over the past twenty years she has led walks and canoe trips in nutshimit, “on the land,” to teach people about Innu culture and knowledge.
She sits here on the precipice of the highly destructive Muskrat Falls Dam, in Newfoundland & Labrador. I am continually inspired by her leadership, her tenacity and her devotion to her family, her people and nutshimit.
