Child Advocacy Centre Mural

In the summer of 2015 two of my colleagues and I joined forces and volunteered to paint a mural for the waiting room in the Simcoe/Muskoka Child Advocacy Centre. The centre operates on a fairly limited budget, and provides such an essential service to so many children, that this seemed like the right thing to do.

The Child Advocacy Centre is a child-friendly centre in which multidisciplinary professionals provide services to children and youth who have experienced abuse.​  In this space, police officers and child protection workers conduct forensic interviews, paediatricians provide examinations, and child advocates support and assist children/youth and families throughout the entire process.​

For those children and caregivers who find themselves here, it is an understandably stressful time, and so our goal was to paint a wall in the “green” room, which would both brighten and calm the space. Patti Agapi, Meg Leslie and I only had one day to complete this project. I arrived about an hour late to the party, and the girls already had things well underway.

Most of the day we worked under, over and around each other, intuitively picking up where each of us left off. We were all very pleased with the result, as was the director of the centre. It was a beautiful day.
