The Streets Alive! Letters of Orillia project has caught the eye of not only area residents and tourists, but also Helping Hands Orillia.
“Initially, when I noticed this letter ‘O’ designed by artist Kathryn Kaiser with the various hands, I was instantly drawn to this particular letter,” said Victoria Cescon, volunteer co-ordinator with Helping Hands, which provides services to seniors in the area. “I felt it was very symbolic to our not-for-profit organization, as we are so very fortunate to have community members donate numerous helping hands. Volunteers support our programs designed for seniors to live independently and to maintain and enhance their quality of life.”
After purchasing the Letters of Orillia souvenir book — in which Kaiser-Hiron describes her concept as having to do with the support and interconnectedness of community, expressed through the visual of hands — for this letter “O,” the link to Helping Hands was obvious, Cescon said.
“With the hot summer weather upon us, area residents are busy with outdoor activities, but our services continue to be busy year-round,” she said. “Currently, we have a great demand for new ‘O’ffice volunteers in the areas of reception, transportation booking and data entry. Volunteers in these departments must have office experience and be proficient with telephones and computers, in addition to providing a regular weekly commitment to our office staff.”
